Realizing not every young man can participate in the outdoor pursuits of the Boy Scouts of America and having been befriended by a National Board Member of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Michael Nelson founder of the Nelson Foundation, directed donations and grants be given to selected Boys and Girls Clubs in several US Cities. The Nelson Foundation currently supports Boys and Girls Clubs in three New England States and two South Western US States. In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. Nelson recently commented at a dinner fundraiser for Boys and Girls Clubs of America, "these clubs and their after school homework programs truly are having a positive impact on inner city communities today and future generations of America's Leaders and Innovators."

Micro-Finance is an idea which has been put into practice by many organizations around the globe. Chairman Nelson of the Nelson Foundation a strong voice in support of micro-finance since 1993, has directed the Nelson Foundation to support and invest in the works of FINCA International as this organization's mission: "is to provide financial services to the world's lowest-income entrepreneurs so they can create jobs, build assets and improve their standard of living." directly impacts each of the five core concentrations of contributions of the Nelson Foundation: Environment, Education, Social Development, Child Welfare, and Animal Welfare. The Nelson Foundation shares the vision for the future of FINCA International: "to be a global microfinance network collectively serving more poor entrepreneurs than any other MFI (Micro Finance Institution) while operating on commercial principles of performance and sustainability." Through the generosity of the Nelson Foundation and other private individuals and foundations, FINCA today reaches 725,000 clients in 21 countries. "It is important for the working poor in developing nations around the globe to take an active role in their future through private enterprise. Whether the investment is in argriculture, as it is here, or in manufacturing or service industries, helping struggling entrepreneurs the world over should be the top priority of governments not just the private sector." stated Chairman Nelson in a release issued in June of 2008, after touring a small village in the interior of Spain, where micro-finance investments have produced several large fowl farms (bird and chicken) raising.

What is Microfinance?

Microfinance refers to financial services provided to low-income people, usually to help support self-employment. Examples of microfinance products include: small loans, savings plans, insurance, payment tranfers, and other services that are provided in small increments that low-income individuals can afford. These services help families to start and build "micro" enterprises, the very small businesses that are important sources of employment, income, and economic vitality in developing countries worldwide.

Because salaried or wage-paying jobs are scarce in many developing countries, most citizens earn their livings through self-employment, creating and operating their own tiny enterprises. But without financial services to fuel their productivity, the poor can never grow their microenterprises into businesses that help them escape poverty. The microfinance movement was born to ease the suffering caused by poverty, and to awaken the global economy's sleeping giant: the under-capitalized productivity of the world's working poor.

"Microfinance is an idea whose time has come." —Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General

In these turbulent times the Nelson Foundation is committed to supporting those organizations which reflect the specific core concentrations of the Foundation, Stand for Israel is one such organization which supports three key concentrations: Education, Social Development and Child Welfare. Stand for Israel aims to engage people both spiritually and politically on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people, by encouraging them to "pray for the peace of Jerusalem" and providing them with the facts they need to advocate for the Jewish state and fight anti-Israel bias in media.

VILLAGE BANKING: Chairman Nelson envisioned micro-finance for developing countries first, in 1993, while attending University at Norwich University. In papers published in 1994, Nelson outlined a global plan for Village Banking. Today the Nelson Foundation works with several NGO's and other private foundations to provide Village Banking, FINCA is one of the largest organizations funded with resources of the Nelson Foundation and associated companies of it's founder. What is Village Banking? By providing very poor families with small loans to invest in their microenterprises, Village Banking empowers them to create their own jobs, raise their incomes, build assets, and increase their families' well-being. Here's how it works. Neighbors come together in financial support groups called "Village Banks." Individuals borrow working capital for their microenterprises, and because they have little to offer for collateral, the group guarantees those loans. As businesses grow, families earn more, purchase more nutritious foods, and parents are better able to send their children to school. After a year or more, many Village Bankers make significant improvements to their businesses, their homes, and their lives. Because neighbors support each other while growing their businesses, Village Banking helps invigorate entire communities. Village Banking is designed to reach the poorest of the working poor. FINCA clients—70 percent of whom are women—have no other sources of working capital. FINCA works closely with its clients to help them build their businesses so they can earn more, become part of the larger marketplace, and enter the global economy. In addition to working capital, we provide them with insurance, savings plans, and other services to help them weather crises such as illness or death in the family, or natural disasters. The Village Banking project draws upon many of the principles written about by Nelson in 1994, the Village Banking Campaign is headed by FINCA International and enables FINCA to more than DOUBLE its impact, using the power of microfinance to extend loans, microinsurance, and savings to more than ONE MILLION poor families by 2010, enabling those working poor to effect their own development by being productive themselves.

CleanH2O.org is the culmination of more than 15 years of giving to poor rural areas by NelsonFoundation.com founder Michael E. Nelson. Since his early teens Nelson has given generously to various causes and supported organizations dedicated to bringing Clean H2O (water) to the under-developed Nations and regions throughout the world.Today more than 1.4 Billion people world-wide don’t have safe drinking water. A child dies every 15 seconds from lack of clean H2O! One in four children who die before age 5 worldwide, die of a water related disease. Children often walk miles every day to collect dirty water to drink. Through the CleanH2O.org project the Nelson Foundation with your generous support can change all this negativity for just $20, less than the cost to fill your tank with gas just one time! Kenya, a developing Nation and home to the late father of President Barack Obama, is just one of many countries around the globe which is struggling with generating CleanH2O for their people. Dirty, diseased water leads to a cycle of poverty and continued un-developed nations around the world, the Nelson Foundation through the resources of it’s founder Michael E. Nelson, is working diligently with other similarly focused NGO’s around the world to end this cycle of poverty, through the efforts of the CleanH2O challenge. You can get involved with these efforts and help dig wells, build small dams, and put up water tanks and provide CLEAN and safe H2O for millions around the globe, helping with ending the cycle of poverty, disease and death. Every year more than $100 Billion dollars is spent on bottled water around the globe. The United Nations estimates that if given just 1/6th of the money spent on bottled water each year around the globe, approximately $15 Billion, this money could cut in half the number of people without access to Clean H2O.

Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale

The mission of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families by providing comprehensive assistance to those in need of food, clothing, and household items and through individual and systemic advocacy for our clients. Our vision is to eliminate hunger in our community. The Jonnycake Center was founded in 1973 by a group of four women who saw a need for an agency that could help people who might not qualify for support through established agencies. They named it after jonnycake meal, a basic necessity in colonial days, because their goal was to provide basic necessities for local people in need. In the beginning, we provided one pound chicken dinners to senior citizens. The Center was operated from a store front in Wakefield before moving to our present location at the rotary in Peace Dale.

Today the Jonnycake Center’s Emergency Food Pantry provides food to individuals and families who are having a hard time making ends meet. Households can come to the Center once a month and receive nutritionally balanced food baskets that contain enough food to prepare three meals a day for an entire week for all household members.

During school vacations we offer a Vacation Breakfast and Lunch Program for school-age children of clients who received free or subsidized lunches at school. This program includes school vacations in February, April, and December as well as the entire summer break. And our Holiday Meal Programs provide complete holiday dinners at Thanksgiving and in December.
Our Retail “Thrift” Store generates revenue that is used toward the Emergency Food Pantry. The Store is open to the public, but it is also a source of free clothing and household items for clients in need. We are fully stocked and our inventory changes continually. Clothing is seasonal. We also carry small furniture, books, videos and DVDs, small electronics, and a number of other household items. Come visit the Store... there is something for everyone!
